High School Students Win $100,000 Scholarships

Call it the “Super Bowl of Science.” The players at this match-up are among the brightest young minds in the United States. They are the winners of the nation’s premiere math, science and technology competition for high school students. And for the first time in the nine year-history of the Siemens Competition, girls swept the top prizes in both categories.

Isha Jain, a senior at Freedom High School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, won the $100,000 scholarship in the individual category for her research on bone growth. Janelle Schlossberger and Amanda Marinoff, seniors at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School in Plainview, New York, won the $100,000 prize (which they will share) in the team category for their research on tuberculosis. All finalists walked away with scholarships ranging from $10,000 to $100,000 after having beaten out more than 1,600 contestants. There were six individuals and six team finalists.

This year’s projects include a webcam monitoring system to ensure the safe cooking of hamburgers that could help prevent E. Coli breakouts in the fast food industry; the discovery of a gene that could make tumors resistant to a common breast cancer drug; discoveries about the oceans with important implications for the global climate; and research that could lead to more effective treatment of brain tumors, the next generation of anti-tuberculosis drugs, new ways to treat Herpes Simplex Virus and even help people avoid jet lag and insomnia.

The Art Institutes Poster Design Competition 2007

For high school seniors with an interest in turning their love of art into a career, The Art Institutes is sponsoring a Poster Design Competition, a program which awards tuition scholarships of up to $25,000 to study graphic design at a participating Art Institute location.
In partnership with the not-for-profit organization Americans for the Arts, The Art Institutes Poster Design Competition is an opportunity for talented young artists at the high school level to study graphic design, earn a degree and launch a professional career in the graphic design field.
Deadline for entries is February 8, 2008. Judging at the local level will take place by March 28, 2008. National winners will be notified by May 9, 2008. In all, approximately $100,000 in tuition scholarships will be awarded by The Arts Institutes schools.
According to John Mazzoni, President of The Art Institutes, “For many high school students who love to draw and illustrate, the Poster Design Competition is a scholarship competition opportunity for prospective students to have a career in a field that they are passionate and excited about.” Now in its fifth year, The Art Institutes Poster Design Competition, “encourages and rewards exceptional young artistic talent and nurtures it in a formal, academic setting.” He says.

good colleges for major in business management?

Right now I am in high school, but one day I hope to own my own business, a restaurant or hotel. I have a 4.06 GPA and am already taking many AP and other advanced classes as a sophomore. I hope to major in business management (or something along those lines) and minor in either psychology or culinary. What colleges would you recomend?

I would like to stay in the state of GA though, so I can get the HOPE.

Also, how many other scholarships do you think I could get, because i don’t have a college savings account?
Also, what are some extra classes i could take in high school to help me out in college?

I am already taking culinary and am planning on taking ap statistics and ap calculus my junior and senior years.

Financial Aid? Sholarships? Grants? Loans? WHATEVER!?

My dream college is in Florida. It's called Johnson & Wales. I live in Michigan. My parents are worried about the finances. I have some scholarships, but they won't cover the whole cost. My family is middle class, both parents in the home with pretty decent jobs so you can imagine that my federal money isn't that large. I need help! I've applied for scholarships, but my grades are just okay so that doesn't really help. I have a 3.3 GPA and I got a 20 on the ACT. I am very active at my school and in my community. My passion is Culinary Arts/business. I really want to go away to college, but I just don't have the means to pay for it. What do you suggest?

I never knew that they had so many campuses – I was only aware of the one in Rode Island – Wow…

Anyway nothing can stand in the way of you going to school and fulfilling your dreams & goals, so no matter what do not get fustrated or discuraged. There are many resources out there for one to go to school, but it may take time and patience to find them, or for those avenues to open up.

At this point it sounds like your only recourse will be a student loan, which are readily available. I just returned to school myself to pursue a degree in Graphic Design, and what I did was call the admissions office and they helped me find the financeing for school. That may work for you as well – I mean they really bend over backwards becasue they want you to attend their school.

the chance of a lifetime…too expensive??

ok…so i just got a call from the admissions at le cordeon bleu culinary institute…which is one of the best culinary schools in th US. if i have the chance to go there it would be…well the chance of a lifetime for me.

the only problem…im completely broke, and my mom cant help me pay for school. im a junior this year and am homeschooled.

what are some options for student loans, scholarships, and what not that i could apply for?

and if anyone has advice as to what i can do to prepare for culinary school in general…that would be amazing =]

You should complete the FAFSA, which stands for Federal Application For Student Aid. The government will assess your "expected family contribution" based on your mother's income and offer you a combination of loans/grants/work study (if applicable). The website is fafsa.ed.gov

Also, try fastweb.com. There is a very comprehensive scholarship search.

Get into contact with your school's financial aid office.

The fact that you have been home-schooled makes you unique, and there may be scholarships out there for home-schooled students!

I'm in 8th grade (almost 9th) so this is my last year of middle shcool. I'm am very focused on what I want to be and what school I want to go to. I want to be a chef and I want to go to the Culinary Institute of America in NY. Are there any very good shcolarships that I can try to start getting? How old do I have to be to get one? Are there any around CT?

A quick look around the Web confirms there are plenty of culinary scholarships available. CookingSchools.com features a nice article on how to best pursue them. The site suggests starting locally with your church, school, or community center. Once you get older, there are a lot of national organizations that offer scholarships too. Some examples: American Academy of Chefs, American Hotel & Motel Association, Les Dames d'Escoffier, Women Chefs & Restaurateurs, Institute of Food Technologists, National Restaurant Association, and International Cake Exploration Societé.

Since you're about to start high school, consider asking your guidance counselor for help in identifying the most promising opportunities. Good luck (and bon appetit)!
