City college or Culinary Schools?

I’m thinking of taking culinary art program, don’t know which one is better. The tuition and fee range so differently, but the curriculum looked the same. Is there any one have any suggestion or experience?

for a really good culinary school, i would suggest New England Culinary Institute. when my father went there, he said that they have great hands on experience but you have to work really hard! you have to work really hard, but the outcomes are really rewarding! you should check out the website, and see if it interest you! it really helped my dad fuel his Career! www.neci.edu Best of luck to you!

What should I do about my government aid for school?

I’m starting culinary school in January and am stuck with two options. Here’s the pro’s and cons to each. Tell me what you think.

Little more background info,

Tuition is broken into two parts, academic year 1 and year 2. After government aid and one government loan in my name(low interest, no pay till graduation) cost is down to $10,629 for the first academic year. Year two with out any aid will cost $17,000. I will be getting more government aid for that. Not sure of the amount yet.

I have roughly $10,000 in a college fund that I can use whenever I want.

Should I take out a loan with my mom for $10,629 now and wait to use my college fund for the second year.
Or use my college fund now and get a loan later when I go into year two?

….Pros of loan for year 1….
I know I am approved now for the loan. Who Knows if i will be next year.

My mom can cosign now to lower interest rates.
Again will that work next year
….Cons of loan for year 1….
I will have to pay the loan off my mothers credit becasue she is my cosigner
meaning that next year I may be able to get a lower rate on my own next year.

….Pros of using college fund for year one….
No $10,629 loan
….Cons of using college fund for year 1….
I may not have a smaller loan required for the second year.

Use the college fund now. You never know what is going to happen next year. This way if something does, you will have no loan.

This will be my first year out of high school; should I move out of my parents home?

I'm 17, I will be 18 on the very last day of September this year and I live in Pennsylvania. I want to move to Durham, North Carolina. I want to move out of my parent's home for many reasons. My mother has sheltered me my entire life, and I fear that if I stay, I willnot become independent. I have issues with my stepfather and my little brother, that make the home unpleasant. (cannot deal with it for another year). I am taking a year off to get on my feet, before going to cullinary school. I need to find me. I want to move to Durham because there is a culinary school, Johnson and Wales, 30 minutes away, my boyfriend live in Durham and goes to school there, yes we would be living together, splitting rent and expences and everything else. If i live in NC for a year then the tuition for Johnson and Wales then goes down because I would be a resident. I need to find a place, find insurance for my self, find a job down there, and a car before i move. If anyone has any information or advice.
My boyfriend understands that he is not the #1 reason I am moving there. He knows and tells me that my studies come first. Im there to get out of my home now, which is so awkward, living with someone who abused you in the past. and i would be home at the end of the day to help him with school if need be. but he knows that i cannot hold his hand, and i have to work towards my career.
i have known my boyfriend for 10 years, and we have dated in the past. but i left him after trying to get him to stop using drugs. he choose the drugs over me. He has been cleen for more than 2 years now. and we have stayed friends.
I'm very close with his family, and he treats me like a princess.

Right now until you turn 18 find a part-time job and save your money that way you will have a leg to stand on if something happens between you and your boyfriend, and you will still need money until you find a job in NC, if its well thought out and its what you really want to do then I say go for it, I went threw they same thing with my parents and was the best thing that I could have ever done me and my boyfriend have been together for 5 years now. Just make sure you are doing this for you and not to be your boyfriend. Talk to your boyfriend and make sure there is an understanding between the two of you before you make that move. GOOD LUCK!

Tuition for Liaison College, Toronto, CA?

I was wondering if anyone by any chance knew the tuition for Liaison college in Toronto, Canada. I live in Rochester but recently visited Toronto and fell in love with the city. I found this culinary school in the heart of downtown, but their website is very vague on tuition costs, saying it depends on what programs you want to take and such. I have an appointment to visit the school on the 23rd but I was wondering if anyone would happen to have an estimate to what it might be? I'm afraid it will cost too much, like the school I looked in Arizona wanted $40,500 for ONE year! Thanks for your help!

Is it against the law to tip student chefs at a student run/college restaurant?

i am a student at a culinary school and we arent allowed to keep any tips that we make when we are waiting tables. my chef instructor tells us its against the law for them to allow us to keep any tips and any tips will be picked up and used for the school for educational purposes e.g. instruction videos, equipment. trust me, i pay enough in tuition i doubt that these few dollars are that beneficial to a school. i would love to have these tips for a friday night!

Your chef/school is correct. It's not against the law for us to tip you, it's against the law for you to keep the tip. Actually they are not supposed to keep the tips either. They need to be given back to the guest immediately.

Ok so this is a question for my friend. She is wanting to go to culinary school (Liaison in toronto to be specific) . I think its great she wants to go because she has always loved to cook and been really good at it. My only concern is one of my other friends went to culinary school on PA and she said it was waste of money, and she has had no luck finding a job and now is forced to go back to school for something else. She said she was better off working her way up in a restaurant and the tuition is not worth it. My question is what has your experience been ? IS it worth the money? how hard is it to find a job? What advice would you give someone going into a culinary school ? etc. Is it even really nessesary? My friend looking to go into this has never had any experience professionally cooking but she is a very good cook. She hopes after graduation she would be able to open up her own bakery or restaurant. Is it that easy? What else does she need to do?

It absolutely depends on the reputation of the culinary school. If you go to a school that is well-respected in the restaurant industry then you will have access to jobs you could NEVER get otherwise. Two of my best friends have gone to culinary schools: one to the Cordon Bleu in France and one to the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco (it may go by a different name now). The friend who went to France has a job as head chef in one of the top restaurants in New York; the one who went to CCA is sous chef in San Francisco's most elite French restaurant. You wouldn't be allowed to even chop lettuce in these restaurants without formal training in a culinary academy. If you want to find a position in what are called "fine dining" restaurants in the U.S., you have to go to culinary school. If you are OK with other than fine-dining places, it is possible to work your way up without going to school first, by starting at the very lowest level. This sometimes might mean dishwasher! It is not necessary for your friend to have any experience cooking professionally, but she must do far more research on the range of culinary schools before she picks one, and become alot clearer on her career goals. I think an investment in a good culinary academy is worth every penny and more. You learn about much more than just cooking: restaurant management, laws about hygiene and licenses, how to select vendors, training your staff, etc.

California School of Culinary Arts (Pasadena) info?

Is this a program suitable for a complete beginner or should I have experience as a chef first? Should I attend related classes at a community college first, perhaps? What are the tuition costs? I'd appreciate as much information as you can provide.

It wouldn't hurt to call the school and talk to a student counselor.
As high as the tuition is, I wouldn't be out any cost for additional classes. Ive had some family members pursue this, and they went straight to the school. The tuition is very costly.
After you get in, then pursue a restaurant position, it would look very nice on your resume.
